Kongunadu Coimbatore (Kovai)

Coimbatore is part of the ancient division of Tamilakkam which were ruled by Kongu chieftains. Kongunadu is known for having remained independent often defying the powerful Chola and Chera empires. Modern Kongunadu region comprises the revenue districts of Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Udagamandalam (Ooty), Dharmapuri, Namakkal and Karur in addition to several border areas in Kerala and Karnataka.
